PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has blamed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over what he claimed was the weakening of Islamic political power.
Hadi pointed out that this was despite the country comprising 65 percent of Muslims while non-Muslims only made up 35 percent.
"But Islamic political power is very weak. The cause was the former prime minister Dr Mahathir Moahamad who adopted a strategy of marginalising PAS.
"This strategy backfired on Umno as well as Islam and needs to be rectified by all of us," he said during a ceramah in Marang last Friday.
A video recording of the event was uploaded by Terengganukini.
Hadi said Mahathir did this by making constituencies where Islam was "strong" large, but those that favoured Umno small.
"When the constituency boundaries are drawn to marginalise PAS, constituencies in Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and northern Perak, where Umno is strong, the voters amount to 80,000 to 100,000.
"Constituencies where Umno is strong, a parliamentary seat is only 20,000 to 30,000. Putrajaya is only 16,000," he said.
As such, Hadi said Umno and PAS should rectify this situation together.
