After social media blitz, Farah Marcella receives Zakat aid

The Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ) has stepped up to aid a 6A Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) achiever, after the story that she was living with her mother and four other siblings in a snooker center's store-room, went viral.
The student, Farah Marcella, who scored 6A in this year's SPM examinations, was living with five other siblings and her mom in a store room located at a snooker centre, where her mother worked as a cleaner, in Johor.
MAIJ Zakat division director Azlan Abdullah said that this was the first time his department has given aid to Farah's family, though he was informed that they were the recipient of aid from the Pasir Gudang parliamentarian.
"I was told that they were given assistance by the Pasir Gudang parliamentarian to obtain a residential unit at the Taman Cendana condominium, but they moved out of the constituency," he told Malaysiakini.
He was responding to a question on whether MAIJ had assisted the family before, in its programmes to find and assist those who are qualified to receive Zakat aid.
Azlan said that his department, as well as agencies like the Welfare Department (JKM) and Pasir Gudang Parliament service centre has met to discuss how they can all assist Farah and her family.
"Part of the decision was for the Pasir Gudang parliament service centre to find them a suitable rental house while MAIJ will help with paying the deposit.
"The JKM will also reportedly help with the monthly expenditures and schooling for the siblings. The agencies will coordinate and if it is still not enough, MAIJ will also help with the monthly house rental," he said.
He added that MAIJ will also disburse RM500 in aid to Farah's guardians from time to time.
Other than that, Azlan said that if Farah managed to secure a place an institution of higher learning (IPT), MAIJ will also help her under the IPT registration assistance scheme.
Farah's plight went viral on social media after she scored 6A in SPM despite the conditions she was living in.
Following this, one of Farah's teacher, Suraya Abdul Rahim, and her businessperson brother Zaikhan Abdul Rahim started collecting monies to help fund Farah's education.
Suraya also took Farah as her adopted daughter to help her further.
As of now over RM8,000 has been collected by the siblings.
According to Zaikhan, Farah's older brother scored 5A in his SPM earlier but did not continue his studies and instead worked at the same snooker centre, with their mother.
The businessperson hopes that the fund will not only help Farah, but also ensure that her other siblings too can continue their education.- Mkini
