Use additional income for fuel subsidies, gov't told

The government should have used the additional income it earned, for fuel subsidies, instead of funding development projects under its supplementary budget for 2016, said Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli.
The PKR lawmaker said the public would get angry if they did not receive subsidies, whereas development projects which did not get allocations under Budget 2016, were suddenly funded with the supplementary budget.
"(As such) I urge the government to stop its plans to introduce weekly fuel price revisions without (reintroducing) subsidies," Rafizi said in a statement today.
Rafizi has speculated that the government is receiving an unbudgeted surplus income due to the rise in crude oil prices.
The government yesterday tabled a RM3 billion supplementary budget bill for the 2016 budget.
Of this amount, RM250 million is for upgrading of works carried out in eight states.

The supplementary budget was tabled ahead of plans by the government for the ceiling price of fuel to be reviewed on a weekly basis.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hamzah Zainuddin however said the government has no plans to reintroduce fuel subsidies, as this can be very costly.
He said subsidising even 5 sen per liter of fuel would cost the government RM100 million.- Mkini
