China-built RM983m eco-friendly sewage plant opens in KL

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has expressed gratitude to a China-based contractor for building on time an eco-friendly sewage treatment plant in Kuala Lumpur.
“I express (my) gratitude to Beijing Enterprise Water Group Ltd because it delivered the project on time.
“I was made to understand they stayed focused on the project together with local partners,” he said when officially opening the Pantai 2 sewage treatment plant (Pantai2 STD) this evening.
He also thanked the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry and the Sewage Service Department for their role in the project.
The RM983 million sewage treatment plant was built by BEWG(M) Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidy of Beijing Enterprise Water Group Ltd, from 2011.
The company was required to deliver Pantai 2 STD, the first underground water treatment plant and the biggest in Asia Pacific region of its kind, in 72 months.
According to the New Straits Times, Hong Kong-listed Beijing Enterprise Water Group Ltd is a subsidiary of Beijing Enterprise Holdings Ltd (BEHL).
Khazanah Nasional Bhd invested RM486 million for a 4.95 percent stake in Beijing Enterprise Water Group, making it the third largest shareholder in the company.
Spanning 17 hectares, the Pantai2 STP has the capacity to cater for the equivalent of a population of 1.42 million within its catchment areas up to 2035.
Beside Pantai2 STP, Beijing Enterprise Water Group Ltd also announced in June 2016 that it had won the RM499 million water treatment project in Kemaman.
In his speech today, Najib said that the government had allocated RM2.37 billion for the country’s sewage operation.

“If you stay in a terrace house, you only pay RM8 per month, and you pay only RM2 if you stay in PPR (People’s Housing Project).
“This means, the government subsidised up to 90 percent of the actual cost. You may describe as hidden subsidy, many do not know this,” he added.
He said the government will build 77 sewage treatment plant totalling RM52 billion in 2040 under National Sewage Strategy Plan, with 46 of them completed- Mkini
