Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says Malaysian police are currently working with Asean Interpol on the attacks.
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said that the three terror attacks in the region were linked to the death of Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi, the Malaysian who was leading the Islamic State cause in the region, from Syria.
According to Zahid, who is also home minister, this assertion was based on intelligence obtained by Malaysian authorities.
“They have identified a network linked to Islamic State called Katibah Nusantara, which is a movement established by them for terror groups in the region
“The police are currently working with Asean Interpol and have a list of suspects at hand,” Zahid told reporters at a function here.
Last night suspected suicide bombers killed three Indonesian police officers and wounded 10 people in twin blasts near a bus station in Jakarta.
The explosions, according to reports, went off minutes apart.
On Monday, an explosion at a hospital in Bangkok left 24 injured.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, a group linked to Islamic State burned a Catholic church, the city jail, and two schools, as well as occupied the main streets in Marawi, a city on the island of Mindanao.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Tuesday night that martial law had been imposed across the southern region of Mindanao, after Islamist militants rampaged through Marawi and engaged in deadly clashes with security forces.
The terrorists also kidnapped a priest and 13 of his parish members.
Earlier this month, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that Wanndy was killed in an attack in Raqqa, Syria on Apr 29.
Authorities came to know of his death after Wanndy’s wife wrote about it on her Facebook page.
Nor Mahmudah Ahmad, 28, had said that her husband could have been killed in Syria in a drone strike.
Wanndy, from Durian Tunggal in Malacca, left for Syria in 2014 with Nor Mahmudah.
He was reportedly linked to the grenade attack on the Movida club in Puchong on June 28 last year, said to be the first attack by IS in Malaysia.
The police named him as the man who gave orders to carry out the attack. Eight people watching a European football match at 2.15am at the club were injured.
However, Wanndy was quoted by Astro Awani in July as saying he did not issue instructions to the two men arrested in connection with the blast.
He nevertheless vowed to avenge those who had been “persecuted” by Malaysian authorities, by launching large-scale attacks here. -FMT
