Police release Jamal a day early

Police have released Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos a day before his remand was set to expire.
Jamal was released at the Shah Alam district police headquarters at about 7.30pm.
The Red Shirts leader was nabbed in the wee hours of Friday, following his beer bottle-smashing stunt outside the Selangor state secretariat office on Thursday morning.
Police said he would be investigated under Section 143 of the Penal Code for unlawful assembly, to be read together with Section 268 for public nuisance.
Speaking to reporters, Jamal said he was released early because police had completed their investigations.
Explaining his actions, he said the stunt was meant to show that drinking alcohol was a bad habit.
"It's not just the Malays and Islam that forbid drinking alcohol. Other religions also do not say that drinking alcohol is a good thing. But let those of other faiths (practice) their religion.
"But morally, this is to send a message to the (Selangor) state government to stop giving approval (for alcohol-related events)," he said.

Upcoming beer festivals have hit roadblocks in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, while such parties in Johor, Penang and Sarawak are expected to proceed without a hiccup.
Jamal said his arrest would not stop him from protesting against things deemed to be wrong.
He also said that he would be organising an ice cream festival in Shah Alam next Wednesday and that he would submit a request to the city council tomorrow.- Mkini
