MACC Nabs 3 For Alleged Involvement In Illegal Kajang Sand Mining Activities

(NST) – Anti-graft officers on Wednesday nabbed three people including directors of a sand mining company for alleged involvement in illegal sand and gravel mining activities in Selangor.
An investigation, launched by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), revealed that the company had allegedly bribed local government officers in Kajang, where the company has operated since 2014.
Sources said the individuals, aged between 34 and 67, were arrested in a special operation which started at 10am.
Authorities had also performed checks on several lorries suspected of transporting the illegally mined resources.
Following the arrests, the source added that MACC also froze RM4 million from the company’s bank account.
“In the operation this morning, MACC investigators arrested two directors of a mining company and an advertising agency employee, who is suspected to be an accomplice of the directors.
“All three are being detained to facilitate investigation into the company’s activities at a location in Kajang that dates back to 2014.
“From initial investigation, the company is suspected of having local law enforcement officers in their payroll, bribing them in return for not taking any action against them,” said the source.
The source said the suspects would be taken to court tomorrow for a remand order application.
Meanwhile, MACC Investigation Department director Datuk Simi Abdul Ghani, when contacted, said the probe was initiated following a tip-off from the public.
