Penang police reveal coffee is from same manufacturer as durian-flavoured coffee blamed for earlier cases.
GEORGE TOWN: Police have confirmed that the two latest victims who claimed they fell ill after drinking premixed coffee had consumed regular white coffee from the same manufacturer as the durian-flavoured coffee blamed for five similar cases earlier last week.
Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said the cases were being investigated under Section 272 of the Penal Code for adulteration of food or drink on sale.
Under this section, those who make any food or drink noxious, knowing that it would be sold to the masses, face up to six months’ jail or a maximum fine of RM2,000 or both.
The latest cases come barely a week after several people fell ill from consuming the “Penang Durian White Coffee” premix.
Five people, aged between 19 and 62, sought treatment for fatigue and weakness after consuming the “Penang Durian White Coffee” premix.
MyCafe believed its Penang Durian White Coffee sachets had been tampered with as the sachets were heavier than usual. It has lodged a report with the police.
In the latest cases reported on Saturday, two men lodged reports at the Sungai Nibong police station complaining of being sick after consuming “Penang White Coffee”.
Their blood and urine samples have been sent to the Chemistry Department, together with the coffee sachets, for analysis.
The latest cases bring the total number of victims to seven, including two women.
Singapore has since banned the sale of “Penang Durian White Coffee” from its shelves.
As for Malaysia, Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam said the ministry was still investigating the samples of coffee and had “no immediate intention to withdraw it from the shelves”. -FMT
