GE14 | Calling names will not mitigate the "fact" that Muar town has been left out in terms of development, said the constituency's Pakatan Harapan candidate Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
In a statement today, the Bersatu Youth chief also rued a senior Umno leader calling him a "kitten".
"Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has likened me to a kitten and said I'm just a rookie.
"If Datuk Seri wants to know more about Muar, he should ask (incumbent) Razali Ibrahim, who has held Muar (seat) for the last three terms. The people of Muar are tired, and yearning for change. In fact, the situation in Muar does not reflect its status as the most important town in Northern Johor," said Syed Saddiq.
He was responding to Hishammuddin, who earlier today zeroed in on Syed Saddiq's inexperience, branding the latter a political "kitten" and a political rookie.
Speaking to a crowd a function in Muar, the Umno vice-president urged voters to not put their trust on Syed Saddiq as the latter does not know issues in the constituency.
"He cannot influence older voters. He is only close to the youth as he is clueless to what BN has done for Muar.
"We are facing a person who is new in politics and yet in social media, depicts himself as if he is great, but he is not," the Malay Mail quoted Hishammuddin as saying, in reference to Syed Saddiq's active presence in social media, especially Twitter.
Commenting further, Syed Saddiq claimed that Muar folks were fleeing the town to find jobs as BN had failed to provide job opportunities.
"Muar is called pension town and there is nothing appealing to the youth. In fact, the people there often go to Batu Pahat or Malacca, due to the lack of amenities in Muar.
"Development in Muar has been stunted since BN came to power three terms ago. Fishermen are complaining and housing projects promised two years ago, remain as dreams. I don't even have to talk about the problem faced by Sungai Balang, which is far left behind.
"Call me a 'kitten' or whatever else, but that would not deny the fact that Muar folks themselves acknowledge that their town is lagging behind other Johor towns. I believe the winds of change are blowing in Northern Johor.
"The people are brave enough to go out and voice out their grievances. Muar voters are smart and they will surely evaluate us, fairly and transparently," he said.
Syed Saddiq faces a three-way fight in Muar, against Razali of BN and PAS' Abdul Aziz Talib. - Mkini
