MCA Youth's central executive committee (CEC) today bowed in defeat, apologising to the people and the party for its "failures" in the 14th general election.
"As a ruling party in the previous government, we did not play our role effectively, ignoring the voice of the people.
"From now on we shall be more humble in listening to the people’s voice, stand together with the people and view things from the people’s perspective," MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon said at a press conference at the party headquarters today.
He said the youth will now seek to play a role as an effective opposition.
After reading out his statement, Chong led the MCA Youth CEC in bowing down twice
However, two MCA Youth leaders - secretary-general Leong Kim Soon, and vice-chairperson Tan Kok Eng - only looked downwards instead of bowing.
MCA suffered a massive defeat at the polls, with its numbers in Parliament cut down from seven seats to just one.
The party's sole survivor in Parliament is deputy president Wee Ka Siong.
Editor's Note: An earlier copy of this report errornously wrote that MCA Youth will not seek to play a role as the opposition. - Mkini
