A High Court judge in Kuala Lumpur reprimanded Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Mohd Yunos today, telling him not to treat the court as a coffee shop.
This came after Jamal replied, when asked during re-examination by his counsel Mohamed Nasir Yusof, that he had conducted searches with the Registrar of Societies and Registrar of Companies (correct term is Companies Commission of Malaysia) on the status of Bersih 2.0 and could not find anything.
This resulted in Justice Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab telling Jamal: "Please do not treat this court like your own coffee shop.
"Where is the result of your search? Is it in court or in evidence before the court? Remember, this is a court and not your coffee shop."
Following this ticking off, Jamal stopped short in his reply to his counsel and said it was based on his recollection of the purported search he conducted.
The Sungai Besar Umno chief was testifying in the defamation suit against him by former Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, who is now Petaling Jaya Utara MP, for his statement that Bersih 2.0, which was about to organise the Bersih 5 rally two years ago, was infiltrated by Islamic State and Daesh elements.
During cross-examination by Maria's counsel N Surendran, Jamal maintained what he stated in his witness statement, that Maria's late husband Yunos Lebai Ali was involved in the 1972 Munich Olympics bombing.
However, in 1972 Yunos was a Universiti Malaya student.
