Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that he would work 36 hours a day if he could.
"I am already stretching my time for as long as possible. I am working 24 hours a day.
"If you can find me more time in one day, (let's say) 36 hours, I will also work for 36 hours," he told the media at Parliament lobby today when asked if he is satisfied with the attendance of his cabinet ministers and deputy ministers, as well as his own.
The previous low attendance of frontbenchers – an issue harped on by Pakatan Harapan MPs, who were then in the opposition – has come back to haunt the administration now.
A cabinet meeting held by Mahathir last Wednesday prompted BN lawmakers to question the absence of ministers from the Dewan Rakyat.
Mahathir did admit that he was not satisfied with the attendance of the ministers and deputy ministers in Parliament thus far.
"I am never satisfied with anything. I think they should improve, but they should have a proper excuse for not attending (Parliament)," he said.
Nevertheless, he declined to set a key performance index (KPI) for the attendance of frontbenchers.
"People can attend as much, and as often as possible. But they are also concerned with other duties.
"They must attend to those duties because Parliament sits almost the whole day, and can people (do other) work on 20 days of parliamentary sittings? They cannot work.
"That's not practical," he stressed.
