Selangor Umno has officially named 37-year-old Sungai Air Tawarassemblyperson Rizam Ismail as its opposition leader, said state speaker Ng Suee Lim.
Ng told Malaysiakini that the state government had received a letter from Selangor Umno on June 27, which named Rizam for the post.
"He was the only candidate named in the letter.
"The state legislative assembly, which will commence its sitting in September, will make the announcement (that Rizam is the new opposition leader)," he told Malaysiakini today.
It was reported last week that first-time assemblyperson Rizam was among the candidates being nominated for the post.
Rizam had said that should he be chosen as state opposition leader, he would strive to ensure all BN elected representatives played their role as an effective opposition and as check and balance for the Selangor Pakatan Harapan administration.
Selangor BN did not appoint a replacement for Sungai Burong assemblyperson Mohd Shamsudin Lias, who vacated the post in 2014, out of dissatisfaction with the composition of the state's Public Accounts Committee.
Selangor BN recorded its worst performance so far in GE14 after being left with only four state-assemblypersons out of 56, down from 12 in GE13 and 18 in GE12.
PAS, on the other hand, was decimated and left with just a single representative, down from 12 in GE13 and eight in GE12. -Mkini
