Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has asked if a letter similar to the one penned for CIA director Gina Haspel was sent to other nations ahead of the last general election.
“We do not want this to be like 1MDB. At first, nobody wanted to admit but later on, it was revealed several people received the funds.
"Are there any more letters? This should be investigated as well," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
Lim said the authorities must launch an extensive investigation into the CIA letter as it concerned the nation's sovereignty.
"Many questions arose from the purported letter as to how the letter was issued, on whose instruction and how can an official write the letter without an order from people higher up.
"I hope there will a comprehensive investigation on this matter," he added.
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that the letter was penned by the Prime Minister's Department Research Division director-general Hasanah Ab Hamid.
It had sought US' support in the event BN wins the May 9 general election with a narrow margin.
Following this, former premier Najib Abdul Razak said he did not instruct for the letter to be written and exclaimed surprise over its existence.
"While I have not had a chance to see the letter, what was reported by the media suggested that this letter was to seek that the US continues its support for the Malaysia government should BN win the election for reasons of the country's stability, post-election.
“What was reported about the letter does not seem to seek US backing to help win the elections - but after the election,” he told Malaysiakini.
