The Tanjung Piai by-election proved that Umno and PAS' Muafakat Nasional pact is accepted by the people, said MCA president Wee Ka Siong.
"Our victory in Tanjung Piai proved that Muafakat Nasional, which was built on the spirit of opposition solidarity without sidelining any races, is truly accepted by the rakyat who love unity and political stability," he said.
He was speaking at the opening of the MCA annual general meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.
BN won the by-election last month with a landslide majority of 15,086 votes.
While PAS was not present at today's AGM, Wee thanked them for their help in campaigning for MCA in the by-election.
Wee said Muafakat Nasional was anchored in the Federal Constitution and put importance on pluralism and moderation.
He reiterated that MCA is willing to cooperate with any party that upholds these principles.
He said BN must also come up with a pragmatic and progressive leadership, while expressing a hope that the new politics can ease tensions between the peoples so that all can live in harmony without hurting each others feelings.
"We must increase our strengths in the spirit of Muafakat Nasional, togetherness, and moderation for the people, and in turn become the best alternative party to replace Pakatan Harapan which has failed to protect the people and govern the country," he added.
Previously, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan (above) said that the Muafakat Nasional charter was explicit in saying that Umno represented BN, and therefore MCA was part of Muafakat Nasional.
However, Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob said MCA was "not yet" a member of the pact.
Wee also said that being a "member" of Muafakat Nasional was illogical, saying it was just a spirit.
"What is a member of Muafakat Nasional? Are you a member of Muafakat Johor? No, you asked one question which is illogical," he had told reporters last month when asked if MCA was a member of the pact.
MCA deputy president Dr Mah Hang Soon, meanwhile, yesterday said "life is unpredictable" when asked if the party would be joining Muafakat Nasional. - Mkini
