A coalition of Malay NGOs which had planned to confront the Seni Khat Action Team's (Sekat) congress on Jawi has instead decided to hold a dialogue with the latter in the near future.
This came after Sekat secretary Arun Doraisamy invited the Malay NGOs, which had gathered outside the congress' venue at Crystal Crown Hotel, Petaling Jaya, to go in and address some 500 people present.
The Malay NGOs' representative Ellie Suriati Omar said she was pleased by the decision to hold the dialogue.
"We're happy and satisfied as the dialogue and forum would allow us to find common ground on Jawi," she told journalists on the sidelines of the congress today.
Ellie said the date and time of the dialogue will be determined together with Sekat's participation.
The congress today was to voice objection towards the government's move to introduce three pages of Jawi lessons to the Year 4 Bahasa Malaysia syllabus, including in vernacular schools.
The Education Ministry has stressed that the three pages will not be part of any examination.
Ellie's group had yesterday caused a similar gathering organised by the United Chinese School Committees' Association (Dong Zong) to be aborted.
This was after they threatened to protest outside Dong Zong's headquarters in Kajang, prompting local police to obtain an injunction against Dong Zong on grounds that the gathering could potentially lead to unrest. - Mkini
