Anwar expects big turnout at PKR national congress

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says he and his deputy Mohamed Azmin Ali are on ‘good terms’.
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has downplayed the reported widening of the rift in his party, saying he is confident that more than 75% of branch representatives will attend the PKR National Congress this weekend.
Asked if his deputy Mohamed Azmin Ali had sent a representative to meet with him for a “truce”, Anwar maintained that both of them were on good terms.
“Our discussions are open. Every day I meet with MPs and I do not care which group they are from.
“But there has been no specific discussions for a truce because to me, this party is united and there is a framework of peace,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the caucus on reforms and governance at Parliament this afternoon.
Anwar will be officiating the party’s national congress as party president for the first time in 20 years.
However, there is talk of a separate assembly, rumoured to be officiated by Azmin, to be held at the same time.
“I have heard whispers but I don’t entertain them. Anybody can hold a gathering. The party congress is the one that was decided by the party leadership in Melaka, the rest of them (separate assemblies) do not represent the party,” he said.
He said he was confident that despite rumours of a widening split being played up by the media, PKR leaders were mature and experienced, and supported the party’s “reformasi” agenda.
Asked about a call by Lembah Pantai PKR Youth vice-chief Nazrin Idham Razali for a vote of no confidence against him, Anwar said: “I did not hear (about this). It’s nothing serious.”
He said people were welcomed to form their own opinions. - FMT
