Works Minister Baru Bian said the government would ensure at least 30 percent of tenders awarded by his ministry would go to bumiputra contractors next year.
This is in line with the Budget 2020 announced in October.
“The ministry is optimistic, and for me, as works minister, I understand the challenges faced by bumiputra contractors," he said when met by reporters at a dinner hosted by the Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association yesterday.
“I will try my best to fulfil their needs.”
Previously, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had said that bumiputra contractors have been awarded tenders worth RM3.6 billion for new government projects, for this year up to August.
Meanwhile, Baru said the cabinet has asked for details on the takeover of highway concessionaire Plus Malaysia Berhad to be tabled again.
He said this was an instruction from Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, so he could review the matter before committing to a decision.
Baru said this when asked whether the issue was raised in the special cabinet meeting on Monday.
For the record, the ministry had previously confirmed receiving five offers to take over interests in Plus.
Baru said the five are Widad Business Group, RRJ Capital, Maju Holdings, Khazanah Nasional Berhad and businessperson Halim Saad.
All offers would be evaluated and studied before being tabled in the cabinet soon, he said. - Mkini
