PETALING JAYA: A rescued dolphin has been found dead two days after it was freed by seven marine biology students at Pantai Tanjung Gelam near Kuala Nerus, Terengganu.
Its carcass was found by Ahmad Nasrul Hazim Ahmad Rahimi, 14, and two of his friends at the same beach yesterday.
On Thursday, the students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) had rescued the stranded dolphin, which had a cut on its head, and released it into the water.
They said the dolphin was eventually able to swim back to sea.
Ahmad Nasrul Hazim said that after he and his friends stumbled upon the carcass at about noon yesterday, they took some pictures of it and returned home to tell their families.
“But when I returned this morning, it was not there any more,” he told Bernama.
Mohd Tamimi Ali Ahmad, head of the marine mammal branch at the Fisheries Research Institute in Rantau Abang, confirmed that the dolphin was the same one found stranded on Thursday.
He said the state Fisheries Department had disposed of the carcass following standard procedure by burying it, with the help of villagers.
He said no post-mortem was conducted as the dolphin had been dead for more than 24 hours and its internal organs had begun to rot. - FMT
