FAKE NEWS, EARLY TREATMENT AND FRONTLINERS

Home | New Straits Times | Malaysia General Business Sports and ...Failure not an option for frontliners' | New Straits Times ...

The current pandemic is riled with misinformation! Misinformation runs rampant during times of upheaval; and the Covid-19 pandemic is no exception. And we are being bombarded with too much news during this lockdown. You are advised to go to a trusted source of information a few times a day and please try not to reach for your phones every time you get bored.

Usually there are two types of fake news. Firstly, they are stories that are totally not true. These are deliberately invented stories designed to make people believe something false, usually with the intent to incite hatred, raise the fear or simply to mislead. Secondly, they are stories with some truth in them but are not 100 percent accurate. This kind of news is biased and aims to convince readers to a certain distinctive viewpoint.

Separating truth from fake accurately can be a daunting task. But getting to the truth is always worth the effort. One of the main reasons why fake news is a big issue is that it is often believable. Many fake news is written to create shock value. It is essential that you keep your emotional response to such stories in check. Instead, approach what you see, hear or read rationally and critically. Also check the source. Find out a bit more about the publisher - is it a well known news desk or agency or is it an unknown individual's personal blog? Check who else is reporting the same news. Please examine the evidence. A credible news item will include plenty of facts.

Our Authorities have tirelessly exposed the various fake news in circulation in the mass media and many of us, if not all, are aware of these fake reports. Our duty is to make sure that we do not circulate or forward these fake news. Any fake news we receive, MUST STOP WITH US!

SEEK EARLY MEDICAL TREATMENT

If you develop warning signs for Covid-19, please do NOT HESITATE to seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY! The emergency warning signs are:-
  • shortness of breath
  •  persistent pain in the chest
  • dry cough
  • fever
  • confusion or excessive drowsiness
BE GRATEFUL TO OUR FRONTLINERS

Most importantly, we must express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to all our healthcare, enforcement agencies and border control frontliners who have worked tirelessly to contain the spread of this deadly disease. Everyone of these frontliners have sacrificed a lot for us all by either treating or containing this dreaded disease. Many have been quarantined and have cried at being separated from the loved ones especially their innocent young children. They live in fear every passing day during this pandemic. THEY ARE RISKING THEIR LIVES TO KEEP US SAFE!!!
