Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah today said allegations that the new Perikatan Nasional-led federal government was installed through a coup or is a backdoor government should cease.
"Recently, we have witnessed a change in federal government from Pakatan Harapan to Perikatan Nasional.
"I have personally followed closely the change in power which was very carefully carried out by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who followed meticulous and open negotiations in line with the provisions of the Federal Constitution.
"The allegations that the formation of the federal government is a backdoor government or a coup is inaccurate and it should stop as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is empowered to use his discretion as provided by the law," he said during his officiating speech for the new Selangor state assembly sitting for the year.
He added that even though Selangor is still led by a Harapan government, he hopes for close cooperation with the federal government.
"I don't want that due to different governments and political ideologies, Selangor is sidelined in social and economic development," he said.
The Selangor Sultan said he understood that in a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, royal institutions should not be directly involved in politics and should be above politics.
"However, as the Sultan in my state, I have a responsibility to advise YBs not to engage in actions that will be a loss for my people," he said.
He urged elected representatives in Selangor to maintain political stability in the state.
"The people are tired and anxious at the political turmoil affecting the country since after the 14th general election until today.
"Politicians are often seen quarrelling over endless political issues that they forget their real responsibilities entrusted by the people in governing the state for the good of the people.
"We know how the people are facing hardship due to rising cost of living, global economic downturn, declining ringgit, shrinking job opportunities resulting in increasing unemployment and finally the spread of Covid-19 affecting the world," he said.
As such, the ruler said he needs assemblypersons to focus on resolving people's problems.
In his speech, the ruler also emphasised on the importance of the environment.
He noted that the state government will be setting up recycling centres in all local government jurisdictions and also selected traditional villages.
He also said the state has shown focus on planting trees in cities to cope with climate change.
The ruler also wants the import of used plastics into Selangor to stop.
The Selangor Sultan also noted the incidents of water pollution in the state and emphasised the importance of joint action by all agencies.
He also highlighted the dry season in October and warned against open burning. - Mkini
