CORONAVIRUS | Former woman, family and community development minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her ex-deputy Hannah Yeoh urged Putrajaya to expand the special allowance announced in yesterday's stimulus plan to include welfare workers.
"We find even though the Social Welfare Department (JKM) workers are also involved in the implementation of the movement control order (MCO), they were not on the list (of personnel who will receive the special allowance). Perhaps it was an oversight by the government.
"We hope that JKM workers who are involved in the implementation of the MCO will also receive the special allowance," they said in a joint statement.
They said JKM officers should be recognised as frontliners and also provide them with the necessary protection to protect them from Covid-19.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin announced a one-off RM200 special allowance to police, customs, immigration, civil defence and Rela personnel who are involved in enforcing the MCO.
The special allowance was part of a slew of measures included in a RM250 billion stimulus plan intended to provide economic relief amid the Covid-19 crisis.
Under the MCO, non-essential businesses and services are ordered closed, and people are discouraged from leaving home except for pressing reasons such as to restock on food supplies.
The MCO, which was initially set to end on March 31, has been extended to April 14. The move is aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19. - Mkini
