A PAS member recently backed the idea of placing non-cabinet-member parliamentarians in GLCs as a way of closely monitoring the corporations.
It’s good that the appointment, despite it’s political, is intentional just for a work matter, but it has to be ensured that if it really happens for that purpose, to-be-appointed MPs should not be paid with monthly salary and other allowances.
Paying no salary is a good test for those MPs who are rumoured and confirmed to be appointed as a GLC head that they will be there for corporations they will head just for the monitoring’s sake, not money or to be proudly known as “Mr Chairperson”.
The people are very irate about knowing political appointments in GLCs do still exist with several professionals recently ejected from the corporations they headed.
It’s sad for the people, especially those who are struggling to even feed a plate of rice into their kids’ mouths, to see that politicians can earn easily by just being picked.
Therefore, if the real intention is to just monitor the GLCs, then prove it by receiving no salary as a chairperson or whatever they might be called. 0 Mkini
