A group of 115 local PhD scholars issued a joint statement expressing support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's leadership of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration.
They comprise two emeritus professors, 22 professors, 33 associate professors, and 58 senior lecturers from 21 public universities and four private university colleges.
"We urge all levels of society to give full respect and support for the current government under Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister to steer the country (until GE15)
"We urge all parties to abide by Malaysia's political system based on the sovereignty of kings, constitutional supremacy, and parliamentary democracy, and stop any propaganda or efforts that could undermine political stability," said the group.
The group urged all parties to uphold humanistic and religious values. The group also wanted the public to adhere to the 'social contract', as well as a national identity founded upon Malay-Muslim identities.
At the same time, the scholars urged those backing the present government to formally unite as the PN coalition, while advising the opposition under Harapan to form a shadow cabinet as a check-and-balance force.
"This press statement is drafted and issued voluntarily by all of us in just three days, out of our own awareness that our voices have the power to shape the nation's future at a critical juncture.
"We have high hopes that our voices will be taken seriously by all relevant parties and all Malaysians in general because there are hundreds of other PhD scholars who support our efforts without putting their names," said the group.
A spokesperson for the group, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) legal adviser Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmod confirmed issuing the statement with a list of 115 signatories.
The list was led by emeritus professor Ibrahim Komoo and emeritus professor Wan Hashim Wan Teh, both from UKM.
Harapan and its allies who have been dubbed Pakatan Harapan Plus are currently in a tussle to determine their prime minister candidate in the event of another takeover of the federal administration from PN.
