Ikmalrudin Ishak has been appointed as the new Election Commission (EC) secretary to replace Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar who went on mandatory retirement on May 30, Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali announced today.
The appointment took effect on June 5.
Ikmalrudin, 49, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Anthropology from the International Islamic University Malaysia, has been in the public service for 24 years, starting as the deputy director (Islamic Affairs Department) at the Prime Minister’s Department in March 1996.
According to Zuki, Ikmalrudin has vast experience in management and procurement, as well as parliamentary and election affairs.
“Ikmalrudin had also served as division secretary (Parliament management), deputy secretary (EC management), and Selangor EC director.
“We hope that, with the appointment, he will be able to lead the EC secretariat in planning, coordinating, and executing all EC policies efficiently and effectively,” Zuki said in a statement.
On behalf of the government, Zuki also expressed the highest appreciation and thanks to Elias for his 37 years of service and contributions as a public officer.
Meanwhile, EC chairperson Azhar Azizan Harun in a statement said that it was hoped that Ikmalrudin, with his comprehensive knowledge and experience in public service, would be able to lead the EC secretariat to plan, coordinate and implement all election policies set by the EC in an efficient and effective manner.
He said Ikmalrudin has an experience of almost 10 years in the EC, starting as deputy secretary (management) at the EC headquarters from January 2011, before being appointed as the Selangor EC director on June 22, 2015.
In the statement, Azhar also expressed EC’s highest appreciation and thanks to Elias for his deeds and contributions as the commission’s secretary during his two-year tenure from May 21, 2018, to May 30, 2020.
