BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Myanmar man was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here today with trafficking 12.8kg of heroin and methamphetamine, an accusation which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
Electrician Ko Ko Maung, 40, was alleged to have trafficked 2,233g of heroin base at the roadside of Jalan Baru in Perai at 6.45pm on June 5.
He was also charged with trafficking 9,883g of methamphetamine and 747g of heroin base at his home at 132 Lorong Sentosa, Taman Sentosa here at 9pm on June 5.
The charges were made under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty.
They were read out to him in Malay, which he said he did not understand.
Magistrate Shamshol Azwa Martadza then set July 20 for an interpreter to read the charges to him.
Deputy public prosecutor Kalaivaanan Murty prosecuted while E Gnasegaran and Audrey Wee appeared for Ko.
The case is related to the largest drug bust by Penang police this year, which netted drugs worth RM1.27 million and saw the arrest of five men comprising four Myanmar nationals and a local. - FMT
