PETALING JAYA: PKR’s central leadership council today said the party will not support Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate for prime minister.
In a statement, it said PKR would stick to the PH consensus for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to be the coalition’s candidate if the opposition returns to power.
“PKR remains open to discussing with all parties, including Mahathir, to save the country and return the people’s mandate.”
It said the party appreciated the effort and proposals put forth by DAP and Amanah, which have consistently supported Anwar as the prime ministerial candidate.
“The problem began when Mahathir took a stand on wanting to return as prime minister for a third time,” it added.
It added that any new administration must be stable and not subject to constant changes in leadership.
It also said the results of by-elections and the views of the people, including Malays who were critical of the PH administration, should be analysed and taken as a lesson.
It reiterated its commitment to strengthening PH and working towards uniting the parties to return the people’s mandate.
“PKR will also continue to focus our efforts and prepare to face a snap election which could be called at any time.” - FMT
