Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has expressed hope that Penang and other states will follow regulations under the Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 or Act 342 for the recovery movement control order (MCO).
Ismail (photo) said this in response to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow who said that the state government would hold a state security council meeting to study decisions related to the recovery MCO.
"I don't understand his statement. He wants to follow which act?
"The gazetted rules under the conditional MCO will automatically be voided as the recovery MCO will be gazetted and enforced on June 10.
"So (he has to follow) the recovery MCO," he said.
Ismail stressed that only the federal government and Sarawak have laws pertaining to the control of infectious diseases.
"Other states don't have and they cannot create their own regulations as it will be void. So they have no choice but to obey the recovery MCO.
'So I hope the (Penang) state government will follow Act 342. I was made to learn that they will have a meeting on Wednesday," he said.
For the record, Chow had subsequently issued another statement on the same day (June 7), saying that the state government would implement the recovery MCO and that the strategy is in line with efforts to strike a balance between public health and livelihood.
Chow further stated that a special meeting to go through the implementation of the recovery MCO in the state would be held tomorrow (June 9).
Yesterday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced the recovery MCO which will begin on June 10.
The more relaxed version of the MCO would, among others, allow people to travel interstate and be involved in various recreational activities. - Mkini
