‘Blunder’ in Shafie’s letter seeking state assembly dissolution, says SAPP leader

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah opposition leader has claimed that caretaker chief minister Shafie Apdal made a blunder in his letter to the Sabah governor (TYT) seeking the dissolution of the state assembly.
SAPP president Yong Teck Lee said the viral post of a letter to the governor dated July 29 bearing the signature of the chief minister had raised questions about a mistake.
He said the letter first surfaced in a tweet by a Sabah deputy chief minister, adding the letter purportedly advised the TYT to dissolve the state legislative assembly.
“But the letter advised the TYT to approve the dissolution of the assembly as contained in Article 10(1)(2)(b) of the Sabah constitution,” he said in a statement here today.
“To be sure, there is no such Article 10(1)(2)(b) in the constitution. So, that letter itself is a blunder,” he claimed, adding, “as for Article 10(2)(b), this law gives discretion to the TYT to not dissolve the assembly”.
Using the local term “pai ulung”, Yong contended the letter to the TYT was a blunder as it was to seek the dissolution of the assembly but the law stated in the letter was to not dissolve the assembly.
“This is an example of “pai ulung”. Was that letter drafted by the ex-law minister Liew Vui Keong? This question arises because Liew is the Warisan lawyer who has kept on defending the dissolution of the assembly,” he added.
Governor Juhar Mahiruddin dissolved the state assembly on July 30, paving the way for a snap state election, the date of which is set to be announced by the Election Commission soon. - FMT
