Ahead of launch, Saddiq’s youth platform hits the road for feedback

Malaysiakini

Since going public with their plan to disrupt Malaysian politics, members of Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s new “Muda” platform have been traversing the country.
The Muar MP himself is in Sabah in time for the state election and was recently pictured wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the youth-led platform’s tentative name.
An aide confirmed with Malaysiakini that he is on a trip aimed at “building the network” for Muda in the state.
Other Muda members, like Liga Rakyat Demokratik’s Amir Abdul Hadi, have been meeting youth groups and activists in the peninsula.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, he said his team was presently touring Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan to seek feedback on Muda’s plans.
Several Muda members are also visiting the northern states.
“The purpose and objective of this road trip are to meet with our friends across Malaysia.
“And ask them what they think about the idea of forming a new party,” Amir said.
“Our objective is not to invite people to join us but more about listening to their opinions and ideas, and to see what is happening on the ground, so we know what young people need,” he added.
Muda is slated to hold an official launch sometime this month, but no announcements have been made yet.
Spearheaded by Syed Saddiq, it aims to be an independent, youth-led, multiracial and policy-driven political platform free from money politics.
Drawing from his experience as the former Bersatu Youth chief, he previously told Malaysiakini that caps on private funding for the movement would be implemented to ensure independence and transparency.
Also in place will be a term-limit mechanism to prevent “warlords” from holding onto power and encourage an ongoing talent-refreshing process.
Personalities who have publicly pledged involvement in Muda thus far include activists, corporate figures, digital start-up founders and religious preachers. - Mkini
