KOTA KINABALU: Barisan Nasional’s candidate for Pitas Sufian Abd Karim has tested positive for Covid-19.
“I just received my Covid-19 result and it was confirmed that I had tested positive,” he said on Facebook.
Sufian went on to apologise to voters, election workers friends and relatives who had helped him campaign in the run-up to the polls today.
“For those who had been with me (throughout the campaign), please take precautions and get screened.
“I apologise for the inconvenience caused, but I hope this does not dampen our spirits.”
News of Sufian getting infected with Covid-19 comes as Sabah is dealing with a surge in infections.
Eight clusters have been detected in the East Malaysian state to date, with the latest, dubbed the Udin cluster, identified on Wednesday.
It also comes three days after Umno information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan confirmed he had tested positive for Covid-19 after returning from Sabah.
On Thursday, caretaker chief minister Shafie Apdal apologised to Sabahans for calling for a state election in the midst of the pandemic, hours after the state recorded the highest number of new infections.
“With the current Covid-19 situation, there is a big possibility that we might be infected,” he said. - FMT
