PETALING JAYA: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has urged the local council to cancel the licences of factories responsible for water pollution resulting in supply disruptions to seven areas in the Klang Valley.
Shahir Adnan, who heads SPAN’s committee on education and consumer protection, said stringent action must be taken to serve as a warning to others, particularly factory operators, to prevent future incidents of river pollution.
Yesterday, the Selangor Water Management Authority said factories in Sungai Gong were believed to be behind the water pollution.
Operations at the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant (WTP) and phases 1, 2 and 3 (WTP SSP1, WTP SSP2 and WTP SSP3) have been suspended since yesterday morning after pollution was detected in raw water.
A total of 1,292 locations in seven areas in the Klang Valley have experienced water supply disruption since. The areas are Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.
Shahir said it was clear that warnings and 14-day closures of factories pending investigations had failed to stop pollution.
“What is happening today shows those who pollute the rivers do not seem to care about the law or maybe they feel it (polluting) is too small an issue to be viewed seriously,” he said in a statement.
The operations of the water treatment plants were still suspended as at 6.30 this morning.
This is because pollution was still being detected near the plants with a reading of 1 threshold odour number (TON). The plants can only operate when the pollution reaches 0 TON. - FMT
