SABAH POLLS | Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin, in appealing for votes during the state election campaign trail, portrayed Umno as a "changed" party but has the party shown any remorse over the 1MDB scandal wrought by its former president Najib Abdul Razak?
This was a question posed by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang. Instead, Lim said Umno has celebrated "Malu Apa Bossku" (What is there to be ashamed of?), a slogan by Najib to rebrand his image amid multiple charges of grand corruption, one of which has seen a conviction.
"How can Bung expect the people to believe that Umno has changed, when Umno, including Sabah Umno, are mesmerised by the 'Cash is King' mentality to the extent that they fully subscribe to the siren call of the 'Malu Apa Bossku' campaign?" Lim said in a statement today.
Sabah Umno yesterday roped in Najib to campaign at Kampung Sembulan Lama, which is located within the state seat of Tanjung Aru.
Najib helped campaign for BN's Reduan Aklee, who will be trying to unseat Warisan's Junz Wong, a minister in the incumbent Warisan-led Sabah government.
Lim said Umno would only have genuinely changed if it fought for all races and condemned the 1MDB scandal as well as corruption and abuse of power in all forms.
"Will Sabah Umno prove that it is serious in wanting to have new norms of operation and thinking and that it is prepared to strike out in a different direction by asking the former prime minister to concentrate on his 1MDB cases in Kuala Lumpur and not to take part in the Sabah general election campaign, as it will be most embarrassing for Sabah Umno?" he said.
Lim added that despite Bung's message of change, the same was not echoed by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Bung, while attending the unveiling of the Perikatan Nasional (PN)-BN-PBS joint-manifesto on Malaysia Day, urged Sabahans to give Umno and BN a chance as they have changed.
The PN-BN-PBS alliance, also known as Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, is seeking to unseat the incumbent Warisan Plus government comprising Warisan, Pakatan Harapan and Upko.
On July 28, Najib was found guilty of seven counts of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering involving RM42 million in funds traceable to state-owned company SRC International Sdn Bhd.
He was sentenced to 12 years in jail and a RM210 million fine. However, he remains free pending an appeal to a higher court. - Mkini
