Selangor cops target 5pct drop in crime index

Malaysiakini

Selangor Police are targeting a five per cent reduction in crime index following the launch of their Crime Prevention Operation today.
Selangor Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief K Kumaran said the operation, which would be conducted until Sept 30, was launched due to the state’s high crime index, especially after the enforcement of the recovery movement control order (MCO).
He said among the crime index that was of concern and would be given attention under the operation was street robberies, which were widely reported of late.
“As the case can cause trauma and fear among the community, Selangor police are taking serious measures to curb the crime.
“We urge the community to come forward to help us by providing information so that action can be taken,” he said after launching the ceremony at the Petaling Jaya District Police headquarters today.
He said the operation would involve 742 officers and personnel from nine district police headquarters - Petaling Jaya, Serdang, Kajang, Gombak, Ampang Jaya, Sungai Buloh, Shah Alam, North Klang and South Klang.
He added that police would mount inspections and roadblocks in selected areas as well as conduct raids to nab wanted criminals.
Figures from the crime index recorded in the state from Jan 1 to Aug 31 showed that there were 1,031 cases of unarmed gang robbery, robbery without firearms (610 cases), theft (2,095), car theft (1,020), motorcycle theft (3,001) and burglary (1,838).
