Covid-19: Govt forms action committee for long-term planning

The government has formed an action committee to draft medium- and long-term plans for the country had the number of Covid-19 infections failed to drop within several months from now.

Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the committee, which he leads, comprised nine clusters, including economy, education, and health.

"For now, we have taken a short-term measure. We have created nine clusters to cover all bases, be it economy, education and health.

"Respective ministers have been appointed to lead each cluster.

"They are now in the midst of drafting proposals for medium- and long-term plans. I believe in the near future, they will present (the proposals) to the committee," he said.

Earlier, the media had asked him about the government's plan in three to six months from now if the number of Covid-19 cases did not decline.

In a separate matter, on reports that many immigrants had fled Plaza Hentian Kajang right after the announcement on the implementation of the enhanced movement control order (MCO) in the area, Ismail said the police would take stern action against them.

"Usually, we give two days before imposing the lockdown to allow authorities to make preparation and allow residents outside of the affected area to return.

"If they returned after the enhanced MCO was imposed, they wouldn't be allowed to enter. So, we give them two days to return.

"But there were those who had fled. Surely, we will ask the police to arrest them. Not only that, they will be brought to the police station and they will face stern action.

"So, there's no need to flee. In the enhanced MCO area, they will be screened. That's much better for them."

Ismail said authorities will make sure that they are safe in the locked-down area. - Mkini
