Covid-19: KK prison is 81 pct overcapacity, says minister

The Kepayan prison in Kota Kinabalu - which is the centre of a massive Covid-19 outbreak - is severely overcapacity, said Sabah Local Government and Housing Minister Masidi Manjun.

"Right now, the Kota Kinabalu central prison (Kepayan) is experiencing overcapacity, up to 81 percent more than the set capacity," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian at a press conference this evening.

The Kepayan cluster had 434 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the total to 1,156.

Masidi said 1,131 or 39 percent of inmates have been screened for Covid-19 as of Thursday.

Meanwhile, he said the Sabah Prisons Department was currently using every available space to house Kepayan prison officers under quarantine.

"This includes office spaces, halls, rest homes, and meeting rooms.

"The officers have been provided basic amenities such as washing machines, mattresses, pillows, blankets, and shower facilities," he said.

Masidi also said the government will be setting up quarantine detention centres for undocumented migrants to prevent the spread of Covid-19 at temporary detention centres. - Mkini
