Govt MP submits confidence motion for PM - speaker

A motion of confidence in support of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been submitted from the government side, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun.

A motion of confidence, if defeated, would mean that Muhyiddin has lost majority support from the Lower House.

"We did receive a motion of confidence for the prime minister. The motion came from the government side, but we will wait for important motions from the ministries to be inserted in the order paper," Azhar was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia in their print edition today.

It is unclear who submitted the confidence motion. PAS had submitted a similar motion during the last Parliament sitting in July, but this was not debated.

Under the Standing Orders, government business is given priority to be debated in the House first.

Meanwhile, Azhar said the Dewan Rakyat has also received more than 16 motions of no-confidence against Muhyiddin.

Azhar, however, told Utusan that there he had received more "important motions", besides prioritising the Budget 2021 debate.

Previously it was reported that Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad and four lawmakers aligned to him had submitted five such motions.

Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has also been pushing for a no-confidence vote to be heard.

The speaker, in a letter responding to Razaleigh, argued that any non-government business could only leap over government business if it receives backing from a minister.

However, in 2015 he had argued that by Parliamentary convention, a motion of no confidence must be heard first even though there is no legal provision for this. - Mkini
