PETALING JAYA: Mercy Malaysia is seeking medical professionals to help in the fight against Covid-19 in Sabah.
Sabah recorded 578 new cases today, or 68.2% of today’s total of 847. Overall, the state has recorded 9,868 cases, or 41.4% of Malaysia’s total of 23,804.
“As Covid-19 cases continue to spike, medical NGOs such as Mercy Malaysia have responded to the call by health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah to support the health ministry by deploying more medical professionals to Sabah.
“The most urgent need is for doctors, nurses, medical officers, medical assistants, lab technicians and radiographers as well as specialists in anaesthesia, internal medicine or emergency medicine,” Mercy Malaysia said in a statement.
The first team, comprising three people from Peninsular Malaysia, were sent to Sabah last week and they are currently working with eight volunteers based in Kota Kinabalu.
Their daily tasks include assisting with mass Covid-19 swab tests and treatment at jails, hospitals and quarantine centres in Kota Kinabalu. Another team of three will leave next week.
Mercy Malaysia said it plans to send teams to Sabah every week until December. Each team will be on duty for two weeks and will undergo a two-week quarantine upon their return from Sabah, with accommodation and meals all provided for.
