More than 1,000 schoolchildren contract Covid-19 in third wave

 


The country has recorded more than 1,000 Covid-19 cases among schoolchildren since the beginning of the third wave of the outbreak last month.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said for those aged seven to 12, the total cases to date is 587.

Those in the 13 to 18 age bracket recorded 670 cases.

The figures were from Sept 20 to yesterday, he said in his daily briefing today.

Overall, since the beginning of the outbreak in February until yesterday, those in the seven to 12 age group had recorded 830 positive cases, while the 13 to 18 age group had 1,315 cases.

Noor Hisham added that a total of 12 schools were temporarily closed after Sept 20.

They were either located in the red zone, having cases of infection from family members or reported to have sporadic cases.

Noor Hisham said these schools are related to clusters.

In Negeri Sembilan, three schools were related to three clusters namely Cahaya, Sofi, and Bah Manggis.

In Johor, three schools were linked to Simera and Rinting clusters.

In Kuala Lumpur, two schools which were closed were related to Jalan Pantai and Long clusters.

In Penang, one school was related to the Alma cluster.

In Malacca, one school was related to the Bukit cluster.

While a school each in Putrajaya and Sarawak were related to Selasih cluster and Bah Arnab cluster respectively. - Mkini
