The special meeting of the Ummo supreme council last Monday did not discuss nor decide upon a candidate to be appointed as deputy prime minister, said Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
According to a report in Berita Harian, Khaled said the Umno leadership had never been informed of any request by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to name a candidate to be his deputy.
"I do not know (Umno was asked to name a candidate). Nothing (was discussed in the meeting)," he said briefly answering questions about reports by several media portals that Muhyiddin was waiting for Umno to decide who would fill the post.
A report by Sinchew Daily on Tuesday quoted one source claiming that Muhyiddin is open to appointing an Umno representative as deputy prime minister, and the ball has always been in Umno’s court to name a candidate.
However, it was said that Muhyiddin cannot accept Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as his deputy due to the court cases still pending against him.
“Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) can accept Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan, vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and Hishammuddin Hussein who does not currently hold a party post.
“It’s just a matter of waiting for Umno’s recommendation, but if they insist on nominating Zahid, sorry,” the source reportedly said.
BN secretary-general Annuar Musa in his Twitter had also dismissed the report.
"Please stop the speculative nonsense report…be fair to PM... be fair to Umno too," he said.
Umno on Monday decided to continue to support the Muhyiddin-led PN government and reject any cooperation with PKR president leader Anwar Ibrahim and the DAP. - Mkini
