RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized about RM1.5 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during 'Op Benteng' yesterday.

A lorry driver transporting the contraband goods managed to escape in a raid which was carried out at Beris Kubur Besar in Bachok.

GOF Seventh Battalion assistant commanding officer, Deputy Superintendent Ku Majidin Che Ku Jusoh, said the cigarettes, believed to have been brought in from Thailand, were seized following a tip-off.

"A team of GOF members spotted a lorry en route from Cabang Empat Tok Mek Ngah heading towards Kota Baru, and decided to pursue the vehicle.

"Realising our presence, the driver stopped the vehicle and later abandoned it along the roadside.

"Upon checking the vehicle, GOF members discovered 100 boxes containing smuggled cigarettes," he told a press conference here today.

Ku Majidin said an initial investigation showed that the 'John' and 'John D- Blend' cigarettes had been smuggled into the state via the many illegal jetties along the Kelantan-Thailand border.

He said the cigarettes were for local distribution, especially to sundry shop operators in the state.

Ku Majidin added that the seizure was the biggest by the battalion since it took over guarding the border on Sept 14. - NST
