Tajuddin: Don't be surprised if Umno backs Anwar

Umno and other non-Pakatan Harapan parties might back PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's bid for premiership if they get what they want, said Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

According to Astro Awani, Tajuddin (above) opined that Perikatan Nasional (PN) was not a sustainable coalition in its current form but can avoid disintegration if it was fair to all its partners.

He said that Umno was dissatisfied with PN because the party did not have enough opportunities to serve the public, especially the Malays.

"If Umno feels that (its opportunities) are reduced, PN should look into the matter and resolve it. If not, our relationship will become more complicated, and other people will take advantage by coming up with other proposals.

"For instance, Anwar might have a formula to make others happy, such as Umno, GPS and Warisan. If these parties believe Anwar can give them what they want, perhaps they might be interested in supporting him.

"Don't be surprised if that happens," Tajuddin said.

Ahmad Maslan

Meanwhile, Tajuddin told Malaysiakini that Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan was too "hasty" in revealing the political bureau's decision last night.

Tajuddin said the political bureau's decision has to be brought to the supreme council meeting to be deliberated first.

"The result of the political bureau's discussion is only the decision of the political bureau, not the decision of the party.

"It has to be brought to an Umno supreme council meeting to be decided first, then only it is the official decision.

"Why was he (Ahmad Maslan) so hasty (in releasing a press statement)?" he said.

The Umno political bureau had decided in a meeting in Kuala Lumpur last night to consider withdrawing its support for the PN government if their new conditions were not fulfilled.

"Umno will consider withdrawing support for PN and will set new conditions for the PN government to continue political cooperation through a written agreement that will be implemented as soon as possible," he said.

Tajuddin also said that Umno would urge for Muafakat Nasional to be registered as a valid political coalition as soon as possible. - Mkini
