MILITARY COUP IN MYANMAR HAS WIDE-RANGING IMPLICATIONS
- Myanmar’s military coup this week, shut down internet, canceling flights
- General Min Aung Hlaing assumed power following coup
- coup follows loss by military’s party in Nov 2020 parliamentary elections
- military’s party USDP won 33 of 476 seats (7%)
- Suu Kyi’s NLD won 395 seats (83%)
- arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi
- Also arrested President U Wyin Mint, ministers, politicians, activists
US, West limited influence in Myanmar
China unlikely to criticize coup publicly
- military held power from 1962 until 2011
- 50 years entrenched generals, elite in lucrative patronage networks
- quasi-democratic elections in 2015
Suu Kyi fallen from grace for refusal to denounce Rohingya atrocities
2017 displacement of 750,000 Rohingya minority
Suu Kyi dismissed atrocities
- coup shows military will not tolerate dissent nor any reform
- China has significant influence, but unlikely to pressure Myanmar
My comments :
The Myanmar people just want to live in comfortable houses with indoor plumbing, electricity, they want to drive nice cars, wear nice clothes, eat nice food, have schools for their children, have jobs and most of all have opportunities to pursue wealth and happiness.
If the stupid generals cannot even provide that - then better just kick them out again.
The world cares less for Aung San Suu Kyi because of her indifference towards the Rohingyas.
Myanmar should look at Vietnam. And China.
