PETALING JAYA: Gerakan has confirmed that it is now part of the Perikatan Nasional coalition, its president said.
Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said he has just received the confirmation from the prime minister.
“We have just received a confirmation that we have been accepted into the Perikatan Nasional coalition,” he told FMT.
Lau said the acceptance letter was signed by Muhyiddin Yassin.
In a letter sighted by FMT, it stated that the PN Supreme Council had agreed to accept Gerakan into the coalition.
“With that, any member of PN needs to follow all the stipulated conditions,” PPBM president and PN chairman Muhyiddin said in welcoming the multiracial party into PN.
In 2020, during a Chinese New Year gathering, Mohamed Azmin Ali, who was then PKR deputy president, and then PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin, sparked speculation that both of them would be joining Gerakan.
It was then seen as an alternative in case they were sacked by PKR after having traded barbs with party president Anwar Ibrahim.
Many pundits had said the move would help revive Gerakan, which is in need of big names to kickstart its political journey. - FMT
