HR Ministry urges J&T to discuss with workers before making any changes

The Human Resources Ministry has urged logistics firm J&T Express to hold discussions with its workers before making changes that will affect the latter.

The advice came after videos of disgruntled J&T workers hurtling customers' parcels at a sorting centre in Perak circulated on social media.

There were rumours that the workers were protesting against wage cuts but J&T had clarified in a statement that it was due to a misunderstanding on year-end bonuses.

It had then issued an apology to customers over the incident.

"The employer has been urged to seek discussion with workers before making any changes concerning their interest.

"This is to ensure that the harmony and welfare of the workers are protected," the ministry's statement read.

The ministry added that it had investigated the matter and found the incident took place in Perak where the workload faced by workers due to a sudden increase in parcels was one of the reasons behind the protest.

The probe also showed that the despatch workers were unsatisfied with the bonus given based on performance and the change in the commission structure, which reduced their income.

J&T, the ministry said, had informed them that the issue between the firm and workers had been solved.

Since the movement control order imposed in March last year, the public had turned to online shopping which led to the significant workload for logistics companies.

In October last year, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had imposed a two-year moratorium on the issuance of courier service licence.

This was to allow the government and the postal and courier industries to formulate news plans for the sector. - Mkini
