Police deployed at Maeps after Covid-19 patients caught stealing phones

A team of police officers in riot gear had to be deployed to the Covid-19 low-risk quarantine centre at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (Maeps) last night after a commotion broke out between patients over a handphone theft.

In 10.30pm incident, a group of patients caught two others for allegedly stealing four devices.

Sepang district police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said police were deployed to control the situation after being alerted by a doctor.

"The doctor said that when she was on duty at Hall C of Maeps, a commotion occurred among patients who were under treatment at the facility. She then immediately sounded the alarm and sought the assistance of police personnel on duty there.

"She was informed that two of the patients had been caught over suspicion that they stole four handphones that belong to other patients," he said in a statement to the media today.

According to Kamarul, the two suspects were later removed from the hall by police. The suspects were taken to another hall in Maeps to complete their quarantine before they could be taken to a police lock-up.

Initial investigations by the police revealed that one of the suspects was supposed to complete quarantine today, while the other tomorrow.

Four handphones believed to have been stolen by them were also seized by investigators.

Several short video clips had gone viral on social media platforms including Tik Tok and Facebook, showing police personnel clad in full personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect them from Covid-19 and armed with anti-riot gear handling the situation.

In one of the videos, the police were seen escorting the suspects out from the hall, while other patients could be heard loudly cheering the suspects' removal. - Mkini
