SPAN investigating 19 drums of scheduled waste found near Sungai Langat

PETALING JAYA: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is investigating 19 drums of scheduled waste found at vacant premises close to the banks of Sungai Langat in Taman Reko in Kajang.

SPAN enforcement officers found 13 160-litre capacity drums and six five-litre capacity drums containing solvents on Tuesday (Feb 2), which they said were not properly managed.

"This could potentially pollute the river and if that happens, the owner of the premises could face a fine of up to RM100,000, a year in jail or both," the commission said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 3).

SPAN said the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) will also be investigating the premises, which is situated on river reserve land, as it is also believed to be operating without a valid license.

It also alerted Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd to be ready to deploy a team of experts to monitor the situation.

The Department of Environment will also be conducting further investigations as the drums contained scheduled waste, while Lembaga Urusan Air Selangor is taking measures to ensure that water sources are not polluted.

The public can also contact SPAN at 03-8317 9333 or at aduan@span.gov.my to report any suspicious activities which could lead to water pollution.
