Warisan slams GRS govt for giving land to federal agencies

Warisan youth chief Azis Jamman says giving away such a vast amount of land undermines the rights of Sabahans.

KOTA KINABALU: Warisan has taken the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government to task for handing over almost 2,000 hectares of state land to federal agencies recently.

Its youth chief Azis Jamman said to “give away” such a vast amount of land was shocking and claimed that it undermined the rights of Sabahans.

“We do not object to building infrastructures, such as schools and hospitals, but the point is that the federal government already possesses large tracts of land in Sabah,” the Sepanggar MP said in a statement last night.

“Why is the current state government giving away more land when many areas already alienated to the federal agencies have been left idle for many years?

“There are many people in the rural areas who do not even have an inch that they can call their own and yet the state government today continues to neglect their needs.”

The Sabah government officially handed over 177 land titles to federal agencies in the state for the construction of schools, hospitals, police and fire stations, and other facilities on Thursday.

Chief minister Hajiji Noor presented the titles for the land, totalling 1,934ha, to state federal secretary Samsuni Mohd Noor on behalf of the respective agencies.

Hajiji had said this was the state’s commitment for the benefit of all Malaysians in Sabah.

Azis pointed out the previous Warisan-led state government had gazetted areas in Inanam, Karambunai and Darau as settlement areas before as the people living there had been waiting for a long time for this.

“That should be the government’s priority. What should be top on their list now is to repair existing roads and fix dilapidated schools,” he said.

Instead, he said GRS is doing the complete opposite of the Sarawak government which is demanding that state land be returned to the people of Sarawak.

Azis contended what the GRS government has done was in glaring contrast to the previous Warisan-led government which awarded villagers with native land titles.

He said former chief minister and Warisan president Shafie Apdal had distributed more than 10,000 acres of land to rural folk from 2019 to 2020. - FMT
