PETALING JAYA: Empathy exhibited by Malaysians to fight Covid-19 is proof that we are a united nation, despite our differences, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“We need to further nurture this positive attitude, ” said the Prime Minister.

When launching the National Unity Policy and National Unity Blueprint 2021-2030 yesterday, Muhyiddin said such an attitude among Malaysians had also cast aside leaders who manipulated racial sentiments for political gains.

Muhyiddin, who was accompanied online by National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Sadique and her deputy Datuk Ti Lian Ker, said the National Unity Ministry’s policy and blueprint, based on the Rukun Negara, was formulated for long-term measures for all races, cultures and religions.

It was formulated in line with the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030, Malaysia’s Five-Year Plan and other existing policies, he said.

“The quest for unity is a journey, not a destination, ” said the Prime Minister.

“This National Unity Policy is our policy. We are all agents of unity.

“Unity is an ardent wish of every country. Malaysia, as a country of various ethnicity, religion and culture, is always an example.

“Even though we have our differences, competitiveness and conflicts, social unity in our society – for long in existence – has kept us united to this day, ” Muhyiddin pointed out.

“This spirit in Malaysians has been most obvious when the country was hit with challenges.

“At a time when we are faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, we saw this come true, regardless of race and religion.”

The Prime Minister singled out the frontliners’ sacrifices for all Malaysians as a perfect example.

“With the slogan #KitaJagaKita, the rakyat assisted the government in spreading positive messages in support of the movement control order and adhere to the SOP.

“It is obvious that Malaysians are patriotic in soul. If this spirit of helping one another continues, I am sure we can overcome any future challenges, ” said Muhyiddin.

He pointed out that the three objectives of the National Unity Policy were to strengthen unity and national integration based on the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara, to create a national identity and to mould Malaysians who appreciate and practise unity.

Along with this comes a warning from the Prime Minister.

“The government will not compromise on anyone who threatens the country’s unity, ” he said.

The policy and blueprint will be carried out by the National Unity Ministry under the Prime Minister’s Department. - Star
