A 21-year-old held under a law that allows for detention without trial has reportedly died in Kluang Hospital, Johor, weeks after being moved to the Simpang Renggam prison.
According to a Free Malaysia Today article citing a police report lodged by a prison official, the official claimed a doctor at the hospital said Surendran Shanker had died of “septic shock with multiple organ failure”.
However, the article said Surendran’s family suspected foul play.
“We have to accept that he is gone but I feel there is injustice here. We feel there is foul play involved as Surendran had no health issues. He was only 21,” his mother Kumatameri Asirvatham was quoted as saying.
The article said Surendran was arrested in Petaling Jaya, Selangor last June for alleged drug offences and was remanded for four days, before being detained under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959.
He was reportedly sent to a rehabilitation centre in Muar, Johor last August and then was transferred to Simpang Renggam prison on April 25.
Kumatameri reportedly said she was contacted by a Simpang Renggam prison official at 4.30pm yesterday (May 26) that Surendran had been admitted to Kluang Hospital on Tuesday after complaining of “severe pain in his stomach”.
Surendran’s condition later worsened, and at 1.15am today, a police officer reportedly told his cousin Surenthar Richard that he had died at around 12.30am. - Mkini
